Road Trip Wednesday: My Writing Road Trip (and 30DSC)

From YA Highway:  Congratulations!  It's the Highway's 100th Road Trip!

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question and answer it on our own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic: What has your writing road trip looked like so far? Excitement? Traffic jams and detours? Where are you going next?

While I'm here, I'll sneak in a tune for the 30-Day Song Challenge: A Song From My Favorite Band.  I have more than one Favorite Band, of course, but for this topic, I'll go with, you know, the Beatles.

Writing, for me, has been a long and winding road.  For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be "an author of books" (so I wrote in my auto-biography in third grade).  At certain times in my life I've been able to dedicate more time to my writing.  I've consulted the atlas and planned my route accordingly.  At other times, writing has taken more than a backseat to other things.  More like wrapped up in newspaper with other fragile collectibles, shoved in a cardboard box, stowed in a deep, dark corner of the trunk of my car.

I wrote a lot in college and eventually went back to school for my MFA in creative writing.

Insert two major construction delays (children) here.

I've been published a handful of times.  I've been rejected more than a handful.  I started writing for young adults in 2006 and found it was a natural fit.  I frequently make pit stops at the YA Library and read and read and read.  I've completed two novels and have two more in various stages of existence and one of them, CLOUD 9, is in the query stage.

WRITE NOW.  That's where I am RIGHT NOW.  I'm writing and reading and querying and believing in myself.  I've recently taken a sharp turn into the land of the social network and I'm grateful for having found other kindred spirits who are on similar journeys.

For all the detours and delays, potholes and toll booths, I know that I'm on the right road.  Long and winding, yes, but I'll get there.

  1. Now you've got me singing at my computer ;) This is a long journey we're on, and it sounds like you've got the necessary dedication!

  2. You can never go wrong with a Beatles song (though Paul's beard period wasn't his best look). :) Writing, reading, querying--that's where I'm at now. I hope you find your dream agent soon! :)

  3. My journey is definitely a long and winding road as well. And yay for jumping into the querying stage! Fingers crossed that you receive good news very soon!

  4. Sounds like a wonderful journey! Best wishes for many publishing successes!

  5. Yay for querying! Wishing you good luck--and skill--with it =). Love the land of social network. It's been such a blast meeting so many amazing people there!
