Editing Services

I offer a variety of editing services for writers of creative fiction and nonfiction. Whether you're just starting out as writer, have an agent or editor waiting for a revised manuscript, or are about to self-publish, I tailor each project to meet your editing needs, from basic proofreading to a thorough query edit.

  • In addition to a check of spelling, word use (incorrect use, overused words), sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation, I will note issues with consistency and potential inaccuracies.

  • For a manuscript that has already been thoroughly edited, this is the final step before self-publishing or submitting to agents or editors: a check for spelling and punctuation errors, misused words, and general, glaring omissions or errors in the text. This will not include inconsistencies or inaccuracies in the text itself.

  • Critique and basic edits for the first 30 pages of your manuscript. Not only will this include line-level comments and suggestions on word choice, I’ll provide a critique of story elements such as pacing, plot, characterization, structure, and more. Prior to submitting your manuscript, you’ll complete a brief questionnaire so that I have a solid understanding of the story.

  • Content and copy edit of your query to agents or publishers.

Please note:  All manuscripts should follow standard industry formatting: 12 pt standard font (Times New Roman), double spaced, 1-inch margins. Word document preferred.

Qualifications + Experience

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in various roles in the marketing industry, including leading a team of copywriters at a full-service marketing agency and as the primary editor for the publications division of that agency. For more than a decade, I provided freelance proofreading and copy editing services for a prominent children’s publisher, and I’ve worked with authors and other individual clients since 2012.

I earned an MFA in Creative Writing, fiction emphasis, from Minnesota State University, Mankato. During that time, I edited and critiqued novels and short stories in workshop settings. Since then, I have worked independently with writers of all levels as well as small presses and publishers. I've critiqued, edited, and/or beta read manuscripts by middle grade, young adult, new adult, and adult authors at various stages in their careers.

My young adult novels, The Last Thing You Said, Cold Day in the Sun, and Bend in the Road, were published by Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams Books.
